Owners have filed 1,630 complaints
about the 2017 Ford Edge with NHTSA between 2017 and 2026.
The largest single group is the engine & cooling.
Across this model's run it ranks 3 of 18 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 82
Against the median year of the Ford Edge. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 19
3.7% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 24
14% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

When owners complained
A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing

NHTSA investigations into the 2017 Ford Edge
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Loss of braking caused by rear brake hose failure
On October 3, 2024, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Preliminary Evaluation to investigate instances of rear brake hose ruptures causing a sudden and unexpected loss of braking in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company. The complaints allege that, without warning, the vehicle lost its ability to brake causing an unanticipated increase in the vehicle’s stopping distance. The complaints also allege that, prior to the rear brake hose rupture event, the vehicle had been serviced under recall 20V-469. Recall 20V469 involved MY 2015-2...
Recalls on the 2017 Ford Edge
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2019 Lincoln MKC, Mustang, F-350 SD, F-250 SD, F-450 SD, 2015-2017 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, 2015-2018 Edge, Transit Connect, 2016-2019 F-550 SD, Transit, 2017-2019 Econoline, and 2019 Ranger vehicles. The rearview camera may display a distorted, inverted, or blank image when the vehicle is in reverse.
Risk: A rearview camera that displays an inverted, distorted, or blank image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
25V544000
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The rear brake jounce hose may rupture and leak brake fluid.
Risk: A brake fluid leak can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017 Edge vehicles equipped with the optional Panoramic Vista Roof. These vehicles may have an improperly welded windshield header, reducing the vehicle's lateral structural integrity. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection."
Risk: If the vehicle has reduced lateral structural integrity, the occupants are at an increased risk of injury in the event of a side-impact crash.
17V123000
AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles and 2017 Lincoln Continental vehicles. In the event of a crash, the driver's frontal air bag may not fully inflate or the air bag cushion may detach from the air bag module. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: During deployment, if the air bag does not fully inflate or the cushion detaches, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2025449122,125 units in Canada
Visual System
Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the connections inside the rearview camera. As a result, the rearview camera image may not display correctly or at all when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Note: For certain models, this recall also affects incomplete vehicles. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the rearview camera.
Recall 202543552,547 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear brake hoses could fail and cause a progressive brake fluid leak. If this happens, there could be reduced braking. Note: This problem could cause a change in brake pedal feel and travel. Safety Risk: Reduced braking can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and replace or reroute the rear brake hoses, as necessary.
Recall 2022311362,062 units in Canada
Powertrain
Issue: On certain vehicles, the shift cable may detach from the transmission. This could cause the transmission not to shift gears when the shifter is moved. As a result, the transmission could be in a different gear than the gear shifter indicates. If a driver attempts to exit the vehicle while the transmission is not in Park, and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle could move suddenly. Safety Risk: Sudden and unexpected movement of the vehicle could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the transmission shifter cable bushing and install a protective service cap. Ford advises that you should apply the parking brake each time the vehicle is parked.
Recall 202037362,876 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: On certain vehicles, the front brake hoses could fail, causing a progressive brake fluid leak. If this happens, the driver may experience a change in brake pedal feel and travel. This can cause reduced brake performance. Note: A brake fluid leak would cause the brake warning light to turn on. Safety Risk: Reduced brake performance could cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front brake hoses.
Recall 2017332696 units in Canada
Powertrain
On certain vehicles equipped with the 2.0l engine coupled to a 6 speed automatic transmission, the torque converter could separate from the engine flex plate due to inadequate welds on the attachment studs. If this occurs, this would result in a sudden loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the torque converter.
Recall 201718126 units in Canada
Structure
Certain vehicles equipped with a panoramic sunroof may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 214 - Side Door Strength. The windshield header portion of the body’s sheet metal may be missing welds. This could result in reduced lateral structural integrity, and may fail to meet the requirements of the standard, which could increase the risk of injury in a side impact crash. Correction: Dealers will repair the windshield header.
Recall 20171024,336 units in Canada
Airbag
Certain vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 - Occupant Protection in Frontal Impacts. Certain driver frontal airbag modules may have been assembled incorrectly. In the event of a crash warranting deployment of the driver's frontal airbag, the airbag may not completely fill, or the airbag cushion may detach from the airbag module, which would not protect the driver as expected, and could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the driver's frontal airbag.

Our 2017 Ford Edge that we bought for our daughter to drive to college already had the passenger read brake line blow out and ruin the seals on the calipers and the parking brake actuator had to be replaced. The pedal went to the floor and she couldn't stop at an intersection and she put a hole in the front bumper. There was no warning in the dash to indicate that there was a problem with the brakes. It just failed out of nowhere. We went to the Ford dealer we bought the car from, Alma Ford and asked them what they could do since that part that is recalled is what broke. They said they could not do anything because they have no parts and would not help us. We ended up having to take the car to an independent mechanic and pay out of our own pocket to get it fixed.

PLEASE SEE ATTACHED LETTER This complaint is being submitted due to gross negligence in recall communication and manufacturer accountability. This failure in vehicle safety oversight that has already resulted in emotional and financial harm. In September of this year, I submitted an application for a buy-back option to Ford but was denied. This application/request was assigned a case number by Ford: cxh05566445w6s6x2 My vehicle has four unresolved safety recalls, two of which directly caused two accident that could—and should—have been prevented had I been notified of the known safety risks. I did not receive recall notices until after both of the accidents occurred, which demonstrates a systemic failure by the manufacturer, Ford. This negligence is not only irresponsible—it violates basic safety obligations to consumers and the public. I request immediate action from NHTSA to investigate this matter and enforce compliance. A description of the incidents and associated recalls that have incurred are described on the following page. Additionally, just last week while driving on a rural road, my vehicle’s transmission unexpectedly shifted from standard Drive into Sport mode (“S”) on its own without any input from me. This sudden and uncommanded gear change created a dangerous driving situation, and I strongly believe this may be another serious safety defect that has yet to be acknowledged or recalled by the manufacturer. 1. NHTSA Recall Number: 25V572 Recall Date: September 8, 2025 Manufacturer Recall Number: 25S89 Incident Date: January 2025 Incident Description: In January 2025, while backing out of my driveway, the rear-view camera suddenly displayed a distorted image and failed to detect a large tree directly behind my vehicle, causing me to reverse into it. This was not a minor inconvenience—this safety failure could have resulted in serious injury or worse had a child, pedestrian, or another vehicle been behind me at the time. I often have my children and neighborhood kids near my driveway, and I relied on

Problem: Rear brake flexible hose leak. The right rear flexible brake hose failed as I was driving home. The brake pedal went to the floor. Fortunately, that only occurred one block from my home. I parked my car in my driveway and looked for the source of the problem. My initial thought was that my brake master cylinder may have failed, so I added DOT4 brake fluid to the brake fluid reservoir. The fluid immediately drained to the right rear tire and on to the ground. I did an internet search and discovered the recall. On XXX I called my local dealer (Bob Bell Ford, [XXX]) and the lady confirmed that the flexible brake hose for the recall was NOT available. I asked her to document my phone call and concern. Ford's own web site stated that my vehicle has a Ford recall campaign dated 2025-08-25, Campaign 25S87/25V544. Rear flexible brake hose leak. This is a SAFETY issue. I was advised to get the flexible brake line replaced at an independent repair shop and provide the receipts to them for possible reimbursement from Ford. I was informed that the recall has NOT officially been issued and that I should receive notification in September 2026. On XXX called Ford HQ on their Customer Service line. They recorded my VIN. The lady informed me that the flexible brake line was not available and to wait for the official recall notice. I stated to her, in other words, my car should be a paper weight that can't be used. She understood my concern. The only way that Ford would reimburse me would be if the work was done by a Ford dealer, using Ford parts (that's currently impossible). I advised that I had no choice but to take it to an independent repair shop and use aftermarket parts to get the SUV back on the road. She said that she would advise her superiors of my concern. On XXX, my SUV was towed on a flatbed to Prince's Tire and Auto Service Pasadena MD for repair. On XXX Prince's CONFIRMED that the right rear flexible brake hose had failed. Over several days prior to 2/10/2026, my vehicle showed continuous brake fluid loss, brake fluid warning light illumination, and significantly increased pedal travel, causing extended stopping distance and near loss of braking. On 2/10/2026 I brought the vehicle to AutoNation Ford Frisco (WO #963104); their OASIS report confirmed open recall 25S87 — rear brake flexible hose leak — on my VIN. The advisor confirmed no remedy was available and advised against driving until Ford released a fix. Because this was my only vehicle and it was unsafe to operate, I had no option but to take it to an independent shop, which confirmed and repaired the failed rear brake hose. This defect posed a serious risk of extended stopping distance and reduced braking capability, endangering myself and others on the road. Documentation (dealer work order, OASIS report, repair invoice) available upon request. Total out-of-pocket cost: $959.60

My motor failed me in my 2017 ford edge 2.0. Very bad misfire from the famous coolent problem caused by Fords decision to make a bad design with coolent ports between the cylinders, that as had my car bucking and was actually very dangerous on the highway i broke down on. Almost cause a accident. When this happen i lost brakes for a second. Car was clunking and bucking do to the motor not running probably with the misfire and motor filled with coolent.. I have 90k miles on this car. Ridiculous. There's no recall yet which is very unprofessional on ford end to make people pay for this fix that is uncontrollable and very pricey

Component Failure: Engine - I am reporting a dangerous engine defect in my 2017 Ford Edge which involves the 2.0L EcoBoost I4 F DOHC 14v engine. My vehicle has experienced total engine failure due to coolant leaking into the engine cylinders. This is a known design flaw documented by Ford in TSB 19-2346, yet no safety recall has been issued for the Edge model. This defect poses a significant safety risk as it can lead to sudden engine stalling, loss of power while driving, and potential engine fires due to overheating. My vehicle started having issues with coolant levels in December 2025, which led to believe that it was the water pump. This was the first indicator that coolant was leaking somewhere. The repair shop replaced the water pump along with the thermostat and heater hose. Later that week the vehicle started stalling and left my daughter stranded. It was able to be jumped and driven to a shop where the battery was replaced thinking that maybe that was the issue. Within 24 hours the engine started backfiring which left my daughter stranded again. The vehicle was towed to the shop and water pump was replaced again under the warranty but the vehicle just kept backfiring and wouldn't start. It was towed to a Ford dealership where they said that it may need a new engine. Ford knew of the coolant engine intrusion issue and pretended that they didn't know what caused the engine failure and the only solution is an $8k new engine. This has caused an impact and financial burden. My vehicle is currently inoperable. I am facing a repair estimate of $8,000 – $10,000 in addition to all the prior repairs leading up to this catastrophic engine failure . My daughter was left stranded twice and other owners are being left stranded as well with dangerous, failing vehicles because Ford has not transitioned this TSB into a formal recall or Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP), despite the clear risk of engine failure at highway speeds. I just bought this used ford edge for my high school daughter. I took it to two different mechanics. Both indicated misfiring happening which means need a new engine. Mechanics said this is widely known issue. Why can dealers sell these cars with a widely known defect. This will create undue financial hardship to me and my family. My stress and anxiety are terrible on this issue.

ENGINE
2017 Ford Edge started generating codes for misfires on Cylinder #2. The recommendation was to replace all spark plugs and ignition coils. This work was performed and the code was cleared. In a few days the same code re-appeared. I took our Edge to a Ford dealership in Clarksville TN. The diagnosis is that the engine suffers from coolant intrusion in cylinder #2. The dealership wants $10,000 to replace the long block. Since this is a known manufacturer defect by Ford Motor Company shouldn't we receive some financial assistance to have this engine replaced. The vehicle has 80000 miles on it. Any help is appreciated!
