Owners have filed 1,254 complaints
about the 2008 Jeep Wrangler with NHTSA between 2007 and 2026.
The largest single group is the airbags.
Across this model's run it ranks 9 of 33 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 92
Against the median year of the Jeep Wrangler. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 29
5.7% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 29
17% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

When owners complained
A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing
out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single
owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 2008 Jeep Wrangler
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2016265459,492 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.
Recall 201621635,110 units in Canada
Airbag
Certain vehicles which are subjected to dusty environments and/or extensive usage with top/doors removed, the clockspring assembly for the driver's airbag may become damaged and fail due to dust ingress. This could compromise the airbag circuit, which would result in the illumination of the airbag warning lamp and possible non-deployment of the driver's frontal airbag during a crash where deployment is warranted, which could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the clockspring, wheel back cover, and column shroud with a design that will further reduce the amount of dirt/dust intrusion.
Recall 201018528,958 units in Canada
Brakes
On certain vehicles, the right and left front inner fender liners could contact the right front and left rear brake tubes respectively, which could cause a partial loss of braking at the affected wheel. A partial loss of braking could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will trim the front inner fender liners and replace the retaining fasteners. In addition, the right front and left rear brake tubes will be inspected and brake tubes found to have the corrosion protection coating compromised will be replaced.
Recall 200933312,695 units in Canada
Powertrain
On certain vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, operating under rigorous off-road conditions could cause the transmission fluid temperature to elevate to the point of causing transmission failure. Should the transmission fluid boil over, it may come into contact with a hot engine or exhaust component and cause a fire which could result in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install a "HOTOIL" message in the instrument cluster and a chime to indicate elevated transmission fluid temperature.

"On March 4, 2022, Customer Satisfaction Notification S33 (Airbag Clockspring Recall Remedy) was performed on my 2008 Jeep Wrangler by an authorized dealer at 123,314 miles. The vehicle now has 137, 347 miles. The replacement clockspring provided as the official safety remedy has completely failed after only roughly 15,000 miles of driving, illuminating the SRS airbag warning light and completely disabling the supplemental restraint system. The manufacturer's mandated remedy has failed to permanently correct the safety defect, creating a recurring hazard." Tom O'Brian dealership and Stellanis have both refused to repair clockspring which is either defective repair item. "Stellantis corporate directed me to speak with you directly regarding a safety component failure. Tom O’Brien Jeep performed the S33 clockspring campaign on my Wrangler at 123,314 miles. The vehicle only has about 138,000 miles on it now. This critical airbag safety component failed after just 15,000 miles of driving. Corporate told me that if you submit a Digital Goodwill Claim through the dealer portal for an internal part failure on a safety campaign, they can review it for approval. Because this disables my entire airbag system after only 15,000 miles, I am asking you to submit that goodwill request so Stellantis can cover the replacement." ," no federal safety regulator or corporate executive expects a vital component of a vehicle's supplemental restraint/airbag system to fail after just 15,000 miles. This extremely low mileage proves one of two things: either the replacement remedy part was defective out of the box, or the "dust shroud" modification required by the S33 campaign was not installed correctly, allowing the new clockspring to fail prematurely.

This is a common flaw with the abs brake system on many Chrysler Fiat vehicles and Chrysler fiat is doing NOtHING. My Jeep ABS computer module went bad . No damage, no off roading. Driving on highway and all the brake/abs/stability control lights lit up on my dash. The abs showed code “c2200” bad abs module and must replace. However Chrysler stopped making these …in back order for years. You have to either get a junk yard part or send your computer away to be Refurbished. How can Chrysler be allowed to not have a critical safety part in stock…and not cover this in a lifetime warranty. ?? I’ve never had any other vehicle where the abs computer goes bad . This is insane. And dealer can’t locate the part in the USA because Chrysler doesn’t have them.

Defective Wheel Spacers Causing Vehicle Failure and Safety Hazard While driving, the front driver-side wheel spacer failed, leading to the complete detachment of the wheel from my vehicle. This unexpected and catastrophic failure left us stranded on the highway for several hours, waiting for roadside assistance. Additionally, the front end of the Jeep sustained significant damage, requiring extensive repairs. Fortunately, we were able to bring the vehicle to a stop without injuries, but the situation could have resulted in a far more serious accident. Upon further inspection by road side assistance, it became evident that the wheel spacer had completely failed, raising concerns about the safety and reliability of this product. I immediately contacted Yitamotor to seek an explanation, reimbursement for damages, and information on whether this issue is a known defect in their product. In my formal request to the company, I outlined the following concerns: Investigation: I requested a thorough investigation into why the wheel spacer failed and whether similar failures have been reported. The supplier has no interest in investigating the failure. The part failed without warning. There are no direct sensors or indicators for this particular part. They claim the part is made of forged metal.

AIR BAGS
Have tried twice by phone to request the closest Jeep dealership recommended on the numerous recall cards mailed to have recalls fixed at Williams Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 1100 E Main st., Stigler, OK. 74462. Each contact with dealership to get appointment to fix recalls fixed the individual asks “what is the VIN number?” give requested info then ask “Did you purchase at our location?” No we did not was purchased in Texas when husband was on R&R from being deployed in Middle East. The person then states”Give good contact number and when the parts arrive will call to make appt to fix recalls.” This has been over six month period with no calls or resolution. I am [XXX] and need to have reliable and above all safe transportation for my spouse who retired 24 yrs active army to drive me. I have tried to be patient and polite that maybe he forgot or misplaced info but appears that since we did not purchase there they feel no need to fix our by law recalls. So any help from your end would be greatly appreciated. Don’t like making out any kind of complaint but need these recalls fixed or vehicle in question will remain parked due to the fact our recalls may or may not injure us and we are not willing to chance dying in a vehicle the manufacturer is responsible for those recalls. Thank you for your time and hope by this investigation this dealership will not refuse any requested recall fixes because of where it was purchased. Finally, due to this report will feel more comfortable going to another Jeep dealership due to repercussions of my filling this complaint. Thank you! FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
The fuel filler neck has an issue. When I refuel, I have to stop the pump manually or the filler cap will overflow. This creates a significant risk for fire or explosion unless I very carefully monitor how much fuel I am putting in the vehicle. I see several other owners experiencing this issue from online information I'm reading. I feel that this is an issue which should be repaired by the manufacturer.
