NHTSA complaint #11758291 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

2017 Ford Edge Lincoln, NE

SERVICE BRAKES

The rear brake hose failed while driving, causing a sudden loss of braking power that nearly resulted in a collision. The vehicle had to be coasted onto a side street where we my son was able to get it home very slowly. Called Ford for repair due to open recall on it and now we have to pay for it out of pocket. Will consider suing on my son and other’s behalf due to the inability to replace these hoses proactively and stalling since April 2026.

SERVICE BRAKES

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The brake pedal stop bumper/stop-lamp switch bumper disintegrated and fell out. Without the bumper, the brake pedal no longer depresses the brake-light switch far enough, causing the brake lights to remain continuously illuminated. I still have the remaining pieces of the bumper and they are available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The brake lights remained on continuously even when the brake pedal was not being pressed. This could prevent drivers behind me from knowing when I am actually braking, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision. The continuously illuminated brake lights could also drain the vehicle’s battery. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No. The problem has not yet been inspected or confirmed by a dealer or independent repair facility. However, I reproduced the issue myself. When the missing bumper material is placed back at the contact point, it depresses the brake-light switch and the brake lights turn off normally. When the bumper is removed, the brake lights remain on. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. The vehicle and failed component have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or a repair facility. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no warning messages associated with the bumper failure that I noticed. The first obvious symptom was that the rear brake lights remained illuminated continuously after the brake pedal was released. Inspection of the brake-pedal area then revealed that the small brake pedal stop bumper had deteriorated/disintegrated and fallen out.

XXX, I parked my Edge car around 11am. I always put the car into park mode before turning off vehicle! The road was flat, good weather and had no previous issues/warnings. I went into building. My gray Ford Edge 2020 ST with 105,000. miles is a wonderful vehicle! I came out of appointment about an hour later and my Edge had rolled backwards 6 to 8 feet! It almost hit another vehicle, parked behind my car! I immediately took my car to local Ford dealership service, Baugh Ford, [XXX]. I was told I needed to pay 1500 dollars for the vehicle to be taken apart to get an estimate of what needed to be fixed? I don’t have 1500 dollars to just give to ford service for them to look online and find what other years and other Ford models have had with this exactly same safety recall! This is a HUGE safety issue and FORD DOES NOT want to fix because this is a vehicle that I paid off in 7 years, have been only driver and never been in any accidents! Problem: Rear brake flexible hose leak. The right rear flexible brake hose failed as I was driving home. The brake pedal went to the floor. Fortunately, that only occurred one block from my home. I parked my car in my driveway and looked for the source of the problem. My initial thought was that my brake master cylinder may have failed, so I added DOT4 brake fluid to the brake fluid reservoir. The fluid immediately drained to the right rear tire and on to the ground. I did an internet search and discovered the recall. On XXX I called my local dealer (Bob Bell Ford, [XXX]) and the lady confirmed that the flexible brake hose for the recall was NOT available. I asked her to document my phone call and concern. Ford's own web site stated that my vehicle has a Ford recall campaign dated 2025-08-25, Campaign 25S87/25V544. Rear flexible brake hose leak. This is a SAFETY issue. I was advised to get the flexible brake line replaced at an independent repair shop and provide the receipts to them for possible reimbursement from Ford. I was informed that the recall has NOT officially been issued and that I should receive notification in September 2026. On XXX called Ford HQ on their Customer Service line. They recorded my VIN. The lady informed me that the flexible brake line was not available and to wait for the official recall notice. I stated to her, in other words, my car should be a paper weight that can't be used. She understood my concern. The only way that Ford would reimburse me would be if the work was done by a Ford dealer, using Ford parts (that's currently impossible). I advised that I had no choice but to take it to an independent repair shop and use aftermarket parts to get the SUV back on the road. She said that she would advise her superiors of my concern. On XXX, my SUV was towed on a flatbed to Prince's Tire and Auto Service Pasadena MD for repair. On XXX Prince's CONFIRMED that the right rear flexible brake hose had failed. 2017 Ford Edge Little Elm, TX

SERVICE BRAKES

Over several days prior to 2/10/2026, my vehicle showed continuous brake fluid loss, brake fluid warning light illumination, and significantly increased pedal travel, causing extended stopping distance and near loss of braking. On 2/10/2026 I brought the vehicle to AutoNation Ford Frisco (WO #963104); their OASIS report confirmed open recall 25S87 — rear brake flexible hose leak — on my VIN. The advisor confirmed no remedy was available and advised against driving until Ford released a fix. Because this was my only vehicle and it was unsafe to operate, I had no option but to take it to an independent shop, which confirmed and repaired the failed rear brake hose. This defect posed a serious risk of extended stopping distance and reduced braking capability, endangering myself and others on the road. Documentation (dealer work order, OASIS report, repair invoice) available upon request. Total out-of-pocket cost: $959.60

The brakes are hard to mash and spongey and it has a hissing kind of sound I believe it is a brake booster. When I bought the vehicle used from a dealership they told me it didn't have any recalls on the vehicle but later own I found out it did have a recall for the abs system so i called the ford company and they told me that the recall has already ended and they wouldn't fix it and now when I look it up online it showed the brake boosted had a recall to that the dealership never told me about but now I believe the recall has already ended on that to but not sure. But if the dealership told me the truth instead of lying to me I could have got to fix so I am wondering if there is away I could get those to recalls done on my 2012 ford edge. I noticed the abs messing up just a couple months after I bought it which was I believe in 2021 or 2022 and the brake booster started messing up around july 15, 2026
