NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

NHTSA investigations into the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Totally Integrated Power Module Failure

In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. Recalls on the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2008-2010 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan and 2007-2011 Dodge Nitro vehicles. These vehicles may have a loose or missing brand emblem in the center of the steering wheel. The loose emblem or the securing nuts for the emblem within the driver air bag module may become projectiles in the event of a driver air bag deployment.

Risk: Projectiles as a result of driver air bag deployment in the event of a crash can increase the risk of injury.

16V047000

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

FCA US LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2009 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured December 31, 2007, to August 31, 2008, 2008-2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles manufactured June 18, 2007, to August 31, 2008. In the affected vehicles, the air bag control units may corrode and fail.

Risk: If the air bag control unit fails, the air bags may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury. Additionally, the air bags may inadvertently deploy, increasing the risk of a crash.

14V373000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured June 29, 2007, to June 17, 2010, and 2008-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles manufactured January 26, 2007, to June 17, 2010. Road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Risk: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

SUSPENSION:REAR:AXLE:NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY

Freedom Motors Inc., (Freedom Motors) of Savaria Vehicle Group (formerly The Liberty Motor Company) is recalling one model year 2009 Volkswagen Routan and certain model year 2008-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country wheelchair accessible vehicles modified by The Liberty Motor Company from February 2008 through January 2011. Over time and with use, the vehicle's rear axle may develop cracks which could lead to axle failure.

Risk: Failure of the rear axle may increase the risk of a crash.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2020311 188,249 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, the emblem on the steering wheel could become loose. If this happens, the emblem or its retainers could become projectiles when the airbag inflates in a crash. Safety Risk: Loose parts that are projected toward the occupants when an airbag deploys could increase the risk of an injury. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the airbag cover on the steering wheel.

Recall 2019420 5,327 units in Canada

Other

Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

Airbag

On certain vehicles, a defect in the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) system could result in inadvertent airbag / seatbelt pretensioner deployment, or prevent airbags / seatbelt pretensioners from deploying when warranted. Unintended airbag / seatbelt pretensioner deployment, in a non-warranted (non-impact) situation, could startle the driver, and could result in a vehicle crash causing injury and/or property damage. Furthermore, failure of the airbags / seatbelt pretensioners to deploy in a crash when warranted could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will replace the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module.

Recall 2015250 161,349 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, the Wireless Ignition Node (a.k.a ignition switch) may allow the ignition key to inadvertently move from the ON position to the accessory (ACC) position while driving, causing the engine to shut off. This would result in a loss of motive power, power steering and power brakes,  and would disable the airbags as well as other supplemental restraint systems (SRS).  Increased steering and braking effort and a  loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Loss of airbag / SRS function in a crash that warrants airbag deployment and/or other supplemental restraint system function could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will install a revised WIN module and frequency operated button ignition key (FOBIK). Note: Until the correction is performed, owners are advised to remove all objects from the FOBIK (Ignition Key) such as additional keys, key chains, etc, leaving only the FOBIK (ignition key).  After starting the vehicle, drivers should ensure that the key is securely and correctly aligned in the “ON” position before driving the vehicle. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 2011096 and 2014261. Vehicles having been serviced as part of these previous recalls will require re-inspection and repair.

Structure

On certain vehicles modified for wheelchair accessibility by the Liberty Motor Company Inc., the rear axle may fracture due to a combination of corrosion damage and operation on rough roads. If the rear axle fractures, vehicle handling may be adversely affected, creating the risk of a crash and increasing the risk of injury and/or property damage. Correction: Freedom Motors assigned service shops will inspect axles and reinforce or replace as necessary.

Recall 2011282 50,250 units in Canada

Airbag

Certain vehicles may experience condensate (water) leakage from the Heater Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) drain grommet onto the occupant restraint control module. This could lead to illumination of the airbag warning lamp, and could cause inadvertent airbag deployment. Unintended airbag deployment, in a non-warranted (non-impact) situation, could startle the driver, which could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. In some instances, inadvertent deployment could cause minor injuries to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will replace the occupant restraint control module. Note: This campaign follows recall 2010437 (Chrysler K25) where dealers replaced the HVAC drain grommet to correct the cause of the condensate leakage.

Recall 2010437 49,823 units in Canada

Airbag

Certain vehicles may experience a water leak at the Heater Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) drain grommet. This could lead to illumination of the airbag light and a potential inadvertent airbag deployment, which may increase the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the HVAC drain grommet.

OCCASSIONALLY SHIFTING BACK AND FORTH FROM 'PARK' TO OTHER POSITIONS AND BACK TO 'PARK' WILL CAUSE THE IGNITION TO RELEASE KEY FOB AS NORMAL. EVENTUALLY FOUND ON FORUMS THAT FLICKING THE SHIFTER BUTTON ONCE IN PARK WILL HELP DEPRESS MICROSWITCH AND ALLOW IGNITION TO TURN OFF, THUS RELEASEING FOB. EVENTUALLY THIS STOPPED WORKING AS WELL. MY FIRST FIX WAS REMOVING THE DASH AND BENDING THE MICROSWITCH LEG SO THAT MORE FIRM CONTACT WAS MADE BY SHIFT ARM WHEN PLACED IN 'PARK.' THIS EVENTUALLY STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. I FINALLY REMOVED DASH AND DISPLACED MICROSWITCH SO THAT IT PROTRUDES THROUGH IGNITION RING AND HANGS OUT NEAR THE KEY FOB. NOW WHEN I PARK, I MANUALLY PRESS THE MICROSWITCH AND THE IGINITION RELEASES THE FOB FULLY EVERY TIME! OTHERWISE YOU'RE STUCK REPLACING THE ENTIRE SHIFT ASSEMBLY FOR OVER $200 FOR PARTS AND MORE FOR WHATEVER LABOR IS CHARGED! ALL FOR A $2 MICROSWITCH THAT IS POSITIONED WRONG.

The vehicle entered "limp home" mode on a busy highway. After a little research, I found out that this could be caused by a short in wiring. There was already a recall on this vehicle related to the wiring harnesses in the rear sliding doors. At the time, we were experiencing no issues, but took it anyway where we were told that everything was OK and as far as I know, no work was done to correct the potential defect. Subsequently that assembly has fallen apart on both sides and now we're left with a vehicle that repeatedly enters limp home mode often at very inconvenient times, triggering the wipers, as well as all the lights on the dashboard. We'd really like to know that this known issue can be fixed and that Chrysler/Dodge didn't actually put an expiration date on safety.

You will be driving this vehicle and all of the sudden the wipers will start going off, all the dash lights go on and off , all of the gages will move and it will start dinging at you that something is wrong. sometimes it happens once and stops and other times it will happen for 5-10 minutes without stopping and then all of the sudden it just stops. We have had it looked at so many times and have repaired different wires and such but nothing seems to work. Now I have found out that the TIPM is bad and you have to wait weeks to get it and then it could happen again.
