Recalls on the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2019420 5,327 units in Canada

Other

Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

Recall 2018439 230 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

On certain wheelchair-accessible vehicles, the bolts used to attach the removable seats to the floor may contain a defect and could break in the event of a crash, creating a risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the defective bolts.

Recall 2017663 7,391 units in Canada

Accessories

On certain vehicles equipped with the Roadside Emergency Kit containing a Kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the suspect Kidde fire extinguisher with a new Kidde fire extinguisher with a steel nozzle. For more information about recalled fire extinguishers, please visit <a href="https://inmarmarketaction.com/kidde/Kidde284CA/">www.kidde.com</a>.

Recall 2016575 207 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain Amerivan 10 wheelchair accessible vehicles built on Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country platforms, the crimp fasteners used to retain fittings in the fuel line may not be fully crimped or compressed. This could result in a fuel leak. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect fasteners and crimp the fasteners further to ensure they are fully compressed and seated.

Recall 2016306 9,190 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain vehicles, a defect may cause the transmission pump rotor to seize or break, resulting in a loss of transmission pressure. This could result in a loss of motive power which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions may increase the risk of a crash causing injury. Correction: dealers will replace the transmission pump assembly.

Recall 2016130 946 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the left front brake caliper may have been cast from an incorrect material during manufacturing. This could cause the brake caliper to possibly crack under an extreme braking application. This could affect vehicle control and increase stopping distances, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect the front left caliper date code and replace the caliper if it is from the suspect casting date.

Recall 2016038 65 units in Canada

Other

Certain vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 212 - Windshield Mounting. The windshields of some vehicles may have been repaired using expired urethane primer. This may result in a windshield bond that does not meet the retention requirements outlined in the standard. As a result, the windshield may not be retained during a vehicle crash, which could increase the risk injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the windshield.

Recall 2015288 1 units in Canada

Suspension

On certain Amerivan 10 wheelchair accessible vehicles built on Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country platforms, the upper rear mounts for the shock aborbers may separate from the chassis. This could affect vehicle handling, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will install a revised mounting bracket of a different design.

I am a paraplegic. I drive an adapted van with hand controls that include a Sure-Grip A600 spinner knob. This is equipment purchased from and installed by my mobility vehicle dealer, and is intended to allow operating the steering wheel with one hand so that the other can operate the throttle and brake, as well as other controls. Today while driving and making a hard turn, the plastic knob pulled off the shaft of the mount, causing me to lose control of the van and have a serious accident. This appears to be a clear case of defective product design as the plastic knob was merely pressed onto the shaft. The shaft and mount for it did not shift or move, but the knob pulled off. There were no features on the shaft to aid in retaining the knob beyond a friction fit.

SEATS

The active head restraint deployed on it's own. I was stopped at a light and the headrest slammed into the back of my head. I was alone in the vehicle, and nothing struck the seat or my vehicle. Upon inspection, the plastic clips that hold the metal bar in place have broken. It caused a headache and neck pain, as it jarred me unexpectedly. This affected my safety, and had I been moving at the time it could have caused an accident, putting others at risk as well. I called the dealer I purchased the vehicle from and was quoted over $600 for the part (replacement headrest) and labor, but have not taken it in for them to inspect it. There were no claims filed, so no inspections have occurred. There were no warnings, neither lights or messages, or any other problems with any part of the driver's seat. It just exploded.

The front passenger side headrest in my 2015 Dodge Van deployed in April 2024. Head rest deployment is a known issue. The dealership told me the headrest was under an extended warranty due to the issue. The dealership placed the headrest on back order for 1.5 years. Now that the headrest is available at the dealership, the dealership is refusing to install it under the extended warranty. The dealership is stating that the warranty expired while the headrest was on back order and they are not obligated to honor the warranty.

The passenger side sliding door is locked into place the power actuator has gone out. An entry way is locked putting people in danger, one way in one way out for 5 rear passengers. Multiple model years have a reoccurring issue. The failure of the sliding door lock actuator is so common that it prompted thousands of owner complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While it never led to a formal safety recall, NHTSA did open a preliminary evaluation (PE21-016) In response, Chrysler (FCA/Stellantis) issued several Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), including TSB 23-017-20 and TSB 23-001-25, instructing dealers to replace the faulty actuator rather than the entire latch assembly. No warning signs of failure dealership is saying my vin doesn't count but I'm within 15 years of vehicles service and under 150000 miles.

POWER TRAIN

The vehicle experienced a sudden transmission/powertrain failure while driving. The transmission began slipping, with engine RPM increasing but the vehicle failing to accelerate normally. The vehicle would move very slowly or not move forward at all, creating a significant safety risk in traffic because the driver could not reliably accelerate, merge, or clear intersections. Prior to complete failure, symptoms included delayed engagement when shifting into drive, sluggish acceleration, and slipping under throttle. There were no clear warning lamps before the incident, or any warning indicators were minimal/unclear. The issue worsened rapidly. Inspection by a service center/dealer confirmed the transmission fluid was extremely low and identified a failed transmission pump. The dealer refilled the transmission fluid, but the vehicle still would not move, confirming the failure was not caused by fluid level alone. The dealer advised that the transmission had sustained internal damage and required full transmission replacement. This failure appears consistent with numerous reported transmission pump and powertrain complaints involving the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan, including delayed engagement, slipping, loss of propulsion, and sudden transmission failure. The failed components should be available for inspection upon request

Yesterday I left to run errands and noticed that my vehicle shifted fine into reverse, but did not want to go forward when put in gear. I thought maybe it was cold and let it warm up the more I drove the more sluggish it became going forward I came back home after driving about 4 miles when I pulled in the garage. I noticed there was transmission fluid on the floor. My grandson came and looked at it and added 2 quarts of fluid. I took it to my Dodge dealer this morning and they told me the fluid was so low that it burned up the pump and now I need to replace the transmission Itself. My drive yesterday was the only warning that I had that there was a transmission problem. It did not seem the amount of fluid on the floor could have made it that low. See the picture attached and you will see the amount of fluid.

SEATS

The part that failed on the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan was the Active Head Restraint (AHR) on the passenger seat. It suddenly deployed while driving smoothly. The vehicle was going about 15 mph and there was no sudden impacts or movement that would have caused the AHR to deploy. It is available for inspection upon request. The safety of the passenger was put at risk by the potential impact of the headrest unexpectedly hitting their head that could cause physical harm. The deployment also caused a loud noise that acted as a distraction to the driver. The problem has not been reproduced as far as I know. I have seen others on multiple websites reporting the same failure of the AHR. The headrest has not been inspected as of the day of this incident report. There were no warnings or symptoms that would have led me to believe something was potentially wrong with the headrest.

The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and attempting to change gear, the transmission started slipping. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, where it was determined that the transmission solenoid might be defective. The transmission solenoid was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the contact decelerated and then accelerated, and the transmission slipped and made an abnormal winding sound. Additionally, while the vehicle was idling and the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle slightly jerked for several minutes. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle towed to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the transmission pump displayed low pressure; however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V461000 (Power Train), and the mechanic referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. I purchased a CPO 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan in February 2020 at around 18,000 miles (CPO warranty up 3-11-22). 18 months later I had to have transmission work done because it was having major issues (they repaired adapter housing and trans cooler line/hoses). 3 months after that I had more transmission work done because the same problems reappeared (they worked on trans pan leak and trans filter change). At this appointment, we asked the dealer that if anything else happens to the transmission around the date of the CPO warranty would a new trans be covered and they said of course. Well 8 days after the warranty expired (3-19-22), the car had to be towed Fieldhouse CDJR because the transmission was shot. A new transmission was put after sitting at the dealership for three months and they said that the trans wasn't under warranty and was $4500. I had to open a case with fca (82695547) in order for them to even start work on the van because they didn't touch it until I got in touch with fca. I was told I would pay $1800 and you would pay $2700. Well the dealership charged me $2700 also so they got $5600 total for that $4500 job. I received a check of the difference from fca and that issue was solved. However, the transmission AGAIN failed 4 months later in October 2022. I took it back to the same dealership because I thought that's where I had to take it because they just did the install. It sat there for 5 months (2-17-2023) until I opened ANOTHER case with fca (85204403) and they replaced the transmission again. It was warrantied until February 17, 2025. The transmission was fine until march 10 2025. Less than three weeks after this warranty expired I lost my transmission AGAIN. Fca says I have to now pay for diagnosis and purchase extended warranty to get any discounted work even though I’ve had 3 faulty transmissions and now have to purchase a 4th that will also probably only make it to JUST past the parts warranty.

Transmission has begun to slip in first gear and has shaking noticeable between 35-45 miles an hour and again much more noticeable shaking from 55-65 miles an hour. Letting off the accelerator seems to assist in this issue. There is an open recall for the transmission of this year vehicle for the transmission pump failing. For some reason our vehicle is not included in this recall. It is available for inspection, and I have contacted a dealer that already informed me the issue is not under the recall, but that the transmission is going bad and will probably no longer function by the end of this year due to the pump failure. I am not sure why our vehicle would have been excluded from this recall as this is a known issue. There are no check engine lights on and we were told by the dealership that the lights would not come on until the transmission failed due to the pump issue not a low fluid or sensor issue. I am going to have a second mechanic look at the vehicle tomorrow and I can provide further information at that point.
